Will Moloney on "Spanish Restaurant Style":
"This is one of those songs that I wrote the lyrics semi unconsciously / automatically based on what sounded good with the rhythm and melody at the time, and then tweaked it a bit afterwards.
It’s a lighthearted song about a few different forms of love. The main theme is that giving is key in matters of love. Serving is key in matters of love.
Anytime you go to a restaurant you are paying them to love you in a way, and we all know love should ideally not be commodified. We can never repay the kindness of the servers who have served us, with feelings of alienation, awkwardness and class antagonism, mostly anonymously. The completely neutral or frowning waiters we should in a sense be most grateful for, for showing us the truth.
The karma of love demands that you give as much as you receive. If you fail to contribute as much as you consume before you die, it will only make it that much harder for the living to continue the fight to emancipate themselves from the system that forces the many to serve the few, in often absurdly arbitrary or detrimental ways (see the essay 'Bullshit Jobs' by David Graeber for a more elaborate thesis on this last point).
Songs open a window to the human imagination. Music is a phenomenon with the ability to unite people across inherited cultural boundaries and expectations, a way to share perspectives in good faith. Music is meant for whoever is around to hear it.
